NEW TO RMS™?

Here is a simple way to get started.

In less than 15 minutes you can learn the basic skills you need to make the air filled, Double Layer Star and the Double Layer Heart that we use for examples in the videos below.

The great thing is that once you learn these basic Double Layer Skills you will be able to immediately make the Double Layer version of any and all of the 19 RMS pre-cut, air filled, balloon decorator shapes available at the online RMS Store in Ballooniverse Mall.

START WITH RMS™ STAR-6 (Six Pointed Star)

Rouse Matrix™ Six pointed star balloon frame – Two come in a package.

Lets get you started with a 2′, RMS™ Star-6 . It has some special benefits for RMS™ beginners.

It has the same honeycomb (hexagon) grid as most RMS™ balloon frames.
It holds balloons of the most popular size for RMS™. (5″ round latex balloons)
All the balloons for the star, and the other 18 balloon frame shapes in this blog, are air filled for lower cost and longer life.
It is small enough (about 2′ in diameter) to handle easily in a small work space.
It has been pre-cut into a popular and useful shape (a six pointed star).
You need only one bag of (100) 5″, round, latex balloons to practice a variety of loading techniques. You may, however, prefer to get two or three bags so you can make designs with different colors.

If we can cover those basics in 8 minutes, it can’t be too hard, can it?

You will be using one of our easiest and strongest methods. You load balloons with a patented double layer technique. It produces a six pointed balloon star with twice the volume and 20 times the strength of a single layer version.

This loading method has the added advantage that it is tolerant of common beginner mistakes in balloon sizing and balloon placement.

That was not so hard; was it?

RMS™ DOUBLE LAYER HEART

The Rouse Matrix™ 2′ Heart is another popular shape. It has most of the same advantages as the 2′ Star-6 for practice. But, the openings are not all the same size and shape. That makes preparation of the balloons and loading of them a little more work. The double layer technique, however, is especially well suited to accommodate those variations..

The balloons do not really load themselves, of course. And, You will not be able to do it all in 36 seconds like this animation. But, you should find it easy and you will get faster and faster with practice.

Some are larger than others and will take longer, but you now know how to do all of them Double Layer. So, try some and then play with adding your own details and embellishments.

“LOVE AROUND THE WORLD”

(Balloon Arts Review By Graham Rouse)

That is my title for this wonderful balloon sculpture by Yuka Yamakita. We would all do well to see more love around the world. And the world would do well to see more of Yuka’s balloon art. This sculpture made with balloons serves both purposes well.

I imagine that lovers throughout the world feel like they are on top of the world themselves when those loving feelings rise and their “significant other” is there with them. Yuka portrays that feeling.

Not only does this couple sit snuggled together on top of the world, but their heart is showing in front of them and a crown sits beside them. I am sure they feel like royalty.

Their world rests upon a carpet. I imagine that carpet is filled with magic inspired by their love. I imagine it is ready to take them flying throughout the universe. I imagine that as we watch their flight, we might be inspired to also travel in similar ways with those we love.

Maybe we too can portray emotions, tell stories and inspire others around us. Maybe we too can send “Love Around The World” via sculptures “MadeWithBalloons™”

THANKS FOR NURTURING LIFE WITH YOUR BALLOON ART!

Snowflakes flutter through our thoughts, even if not through the air. Many warm feelings are inside us, but they battle with too many anxious tasks. Our days are overflowing with activity and our night’s sleep seems too short to

accommodate our wonderful dreams,
resolve dilemmas from the day and
still provide the rest we need.

Yet, as this season tests our strength and resolve, it also nourishes our hope and faith in new beginnings. The work you do helps make that positive transformation happen.

As balloon artists we are blessed to participate in

an art
a craft
an industry
a movement

that works everyday to stimulate and fulfill wonderful visions.

We make balloon decorations, balloon sculptures, balloon graphics, balloon crafts, balloon entertainment and other balloon arts.

We take a little latex, air and imagination and transform them

into colors that rival the rainbow,
into air borne whimsy equaled only by butterflies and fairies,
into visual clusters of positive emotions that once were the exclusive domain of flowers and jewelry.

We often build and decorate spaces, but more than that, we are architects of feelings.

We can begin as simply as delivering the magic of a balloon bouquet to a mother, or striking awe in her child’s eyes as we breathe life into sap from a rubber tree and make a balloon poodle.

We extend the thrill as we engage the mother in choosing balloons for decorations or by teaching the child to make a poodle of his own.

We too are thrilled, as a revelation touches us……. As with the mother and the child, we are renewed ourselves as we move from creature to become a creator.
The mother will CREATE positive emotions in those who enjoy her balloon decorations. The child CREATES a balloon creature HIMSELF. Both stimulate a new level of pride in themselves through the potency of the balloon magic they share.

And NOW….. , the revelation and the thrill can come home to YOU because,

YOU made it all happen,
YOU started this chain reaction of positive difference in the lives of untold numbers of people, and
YOU can make it happen nearly every day.

As a balloon artist, you touch, enrich and stimulate the lives of many others.
You may never know the impact you have on the lives of those far distant from where you live and work. But, have no doubt. There are those whom you will never meet, that will see and feel ripples from the splash you make with balloons here at home.

So we say, “Thanks!”

From New Year Anxiety To New Year Smiles

New Year 2000 had a lot of zeros. Those zeros led to extra anxiety then and to extra smiles today.

Many of you will remember that the new date with all the zeros stirred considerable fear and trepidation. A large percentage of major computers around the world were set up with programs that used only the last two or three digits of the calendar year to identify the year. People wondered what was going to happen when programs tried to calculate time based formulas filled with “000″ rather than “999″? Would it look like time had backed up to its beginning? Would all those formulas fail to work? Would a huge portion of industry and commerce go berserk?

I am so glad the world survived the New Year 2000 computer crisis. And, I am so glad that we get to look back on New Year 2000 displays like this one, remember the occasion … … and SMILE.

FOOTBALL FEVER – 12 Tips For A Great Marketing Lineup

Will you quarterback your team to a successful football season, or are you just a bench warmer who HOPES business will come your way? Be a “Tiger” and go after football sales with team signs like the “TIGERS!” sign below. But, don’t stop there. Use the 12 tips below to line up your marketing program . You will find these tips useful for marketing soccer as well as American football, basketball, baseball etc.

12 Tips For A Great Marketing Lineup!.

(1) Team Stats

Think about your city, county, and state. How much area do you want to cover? Who are the teams? High school only? How many? Where? University or college? NCAA? How about an NFL team? And, don’t forget the private schools and their football seasons.

Look up phone numbers and addresses for each. Get accurate contact info about the booster clubs, fan clubs, marketing departments, etc. Be SURE your contact info gets you to the decision maker. Soooo important!

(2) Market To Host Hotels

Find out which hotels host the opposing teams. Usually one hotel will get the contract for the whole season from the host schools. Get opposing team colors, etc., so you can make an accurate presentation to the sales staff at the hotel.

(3) Market To Bars

What about the local sports bars? Will there be any black out games this season? Fans flock to sports bars for these games. Sell balloon decor to help them celebrate! How about some decor left and right of the big screen? Just don’t block it! Geez!! Where do fans go after the game… especially a winning game? Bingo. The local pub. Try some decor outside at the entrance to attract them to “YOUR” bar. Try some small decor up on the bar. What about the tables? Bars are a great opportunity for sales. Don’t fumble it!

Take a full sized football figure with you as you make your sales calls. That should peak some interest. It’s easy for the customer to visualize the real thing in their setting when they see it there on the spot.Browse and Buy a football player figure already cut into shape for you.

(4) Market To The Tailgate Fans

The fans themselves are terrific sales prospects! Some fans I know are positively RABID about their teams. That’s good for business. What can you add to a tailgate party? Clusters of air balloons with ribbon streamers in team colors on those 10′ x 10′ tents would be such and easy sell! 5 sets at $100 each. That’s a quick $500.00, and we all KNOW how h-a-r-d they were to make!

(5) Market to Stay At Home Fans

There are zilliions of fans who root from home. Don’t leave money on the table. Go after private parties on game weekends. Don’t you know a lot of people who get together to watch the game? Go sell them. The sale doesn’t have to be elaborate. If your balloon decoration is good and on time, chances are you will be remembered for a bar mitzvah or a wedding down the road.

(6) Make A Calendar

Collect all of the appropriate game schedules. How many do you want to cover? Make an expanded calendar so that you can keep a perspective on decor commitments on specific days. The calendar also helps you determine staffing and vehicles needs.

(7) “The Blind Side”

Don’t allow yourself to be blind-sided by scheduling to many events. Will you be able to cover all of the decor you’ve sold? Games days remind me of NYE. All the bars, hotels, schools, fans, etc., want their decor at the same time! P.S. DON’T FORGET THE GAME TRAFFIC!

(8) Know Your Teams

Decide what decor you want to sell. Know the colors, nicknames, mascots… EVERYthing about the teams. Match up your balloon decor options with the teams. Make sure you have the team colors/ribbons in stock. What about imprinted balloons? What is the minimum order? How many imprints would you have to sell to cover costs AND still make some green? Another option for team personalization is to get team buttons. That’s an easy fix on a big bow in the right colors.

(9) Beef Up Your Air Work

What air work do you have to offer that’s different from that of your competition? Why would a football fan choose your company? Research balloon publications to see if you can come up with some fun variations on the basics. (11) Offer 3 Package Deals

Offer a Ford, a Cadillac, and something in between. Why? First because it’s easy for customers to become confused when they see a lot of options. Second, three options mean three price points. Customers almost always choose the middle price point. Knowing this can greatly help in planning. How many middle options would I have to sell to make my financial goals for my football promotion? I should order this many supplies in order to sell 10 middle options.Use football terminology and make your packages fun. How about “First Down Decor”, “Gridiron Lockdown” or “Multiple Offense Total Package”? (12) Subliminal Marketing

Fancy words, but easy to do. For me, subliminal marketing can be as simple as the small things that promote your brand. For instance, Graham and I always wear our company colors at a convention.In terms of selling football, one idea would be to wear the colors of the team to whom you are marketing. What about a team button?And, for heaven’s sake, know if the team you are “recruiting” won its last game and who they beat! Knowing your customer is another form of subliminal marketing. Believe me! Your effort leaves an impression with the client. They will be impressed that you know the scoop.

These four (Sandra Moreira, Nancy Fangles Brown, Silvia Santos and Eduardo Seiti) were part of the tiger team that built this “TIGERS!” banner at a RouseABOUT Graphics Seminar in Clemson, SC USA. Clemson is home to Clemson University. Clemson (USA) football dominated the theme for our workshop

— Text banners like this one could be great business for you in your town. Your banner could be a simple “GO TEAM!”, “Happy Birthday Joe”, “Congratulations”, “Happy New Year” or some other message. If it promotes good feelings and/or good business for your customer, it is likely to also promote good feelings and business for you.

— Our students used Link-O-Loon balloons tied in strings to load the “TIGERS!” balloon frame. This Rouse patented “Speed Graphic” technique is usually 2 to 4 times as fast as more traditional loading techniques, but Eduardo set a new world record at this event.

THE PIZZA PARABLE

Quite some years ago, I lived in Raleigh, North Carolina in the USA. Every

once and a while my wife and I went to a favorite, local Italian restaurant. It was a little out of the way and the prices were not cheap, but the food was great, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was a relaxing change from the hectic pace of our busy days.

On one occasion I spoke to the manager to thank him for a wonderful evening. I also asked him how business was since the new pizza chain had moved in down the road at the shopping mall.

“Business is very good!”, he said.

“When I heard they were moving in, I was worried” he told me, “but they have actually helped my business.”

He went on. “I knew they would have a larger advertising budget. They built in a more convenient location for drive in traffic and they get walk in traffic from the mall that we never get. Plus, their prices are lower.”

“I think we have lost a few customers to them that used to be regulars, but they were ones that rarely spent much.”

“Overall, our business is up, and I think we have the new pizza chain to thank for much of that increase. Their advertising, promotion and visibility have stimulated an increase in demand for Italian food in our area. It would not surprise me if even sales of Italian food at the grocery stores have gone up.”

“But, when it comes to Italian food, we have a bigger menu, we have a great chef, an excellent service staff and a wonderful atmosphere for diners to relax and enjoy the experience. If you don’t mind me boasting a little bit; ‘We are the best in town!’”

“Yes, you are,” I agreed.

“Thank you,” he replied. “And thank you for dining with us this evening. Do come again.”

“In fact,” he continued. “Take this gift card with you. Bring it with you when you return and enjoy wine with your dinner on us.”

“Thank you,” I said. “We’ll do that.”

And we did…. .. .

LOW PRICE COMPETITORS

Has your small balloon business has done well over the last years despite the shrinking economy, the entrance of large department stores and party store chains and even grocery stores adding balloons to their offerings? Chances are that it has not been your low prices, great advertising budget, or high traffic location that has pulled you through.

It is more likely that, like our favorite Italian restaurant, you are providing some significant added value for your customers. It is also likely that you have reaped the benefits of the “big boys” using their great advertising budget, high traffic location and low prices to promote balloons in the minds of a broader audience in your community.

If you don’t mind a little boasting, it is likely that “YOU are the best in town” at something important for your balloon market.

AMATEURS

As Italian foods appear more frequently in advertising and in the news, it will be natural for the do-it-yourself amateurs to gather spaghetti and sauces and microwave dinners and serve them to family and friends. Some of these amateurs will never grace the doors of our favorite Italian restaurant. They will, however, spread their interest in Italian food to others who will become great prospects for our favorite dining spot

In a similar way, you can expect an upsurge in do-it-yourself balloon activity as your low price competitors do their thing. Do not whine about it. Celebrate it. Nurture it. Help each amateur succeed in their small way as they spread an interest in balloons to others.

But, be sure to also show them the difference you can make for them and their friends as a balloon professional.

ROLL BALLOONS

We have received questions from balloon professionals who have a natural concern about these new Roll Balloons in the stores of their low price competitors and in the hands of the amateurs those competitors will supply.

After all, these Roll Balloons that are coming will make many forms of balloon decorating bigger, easier, faster, low cost, longer lasting and reusable for all those low skilled, do-it-yourself amateurs. Won’t amateurs begin doing things for themselves that professionals do now?

Yes they will!

The bar will be raised for what consumers can do for themselves with balloons. And, the bar will be raised for what professionals must do to get and keep the business of those same consumers.

BEING A PROFESSIONAL

But that is always the job of professionals in creative and growing media. You must take ordinary latex balloons that anyone can purchase locally and turn them into something special. You must take those simple message balloons that are available everywhere and make them flatter the egos and satisfy the esthetic tastes of senders and recipients. You must take an ordinary birthday party and turn it into a memorable event. You must do more for event decor than inflate balloons to fill the room. You must use balloons to inflate the image of the customer and his or her guests in the minds of the people that fill the room.

When you do these things, it will help your business for consumers to have and use all those cheap latex balloons, all those simple message balloons and even all those bigger, easier, faster, low cost, longer lasting and reusable Roll Balloons. Those amateurs will be spreading their interest in balloons and helping build a bigger balloon market for you.

After all, YOU are the professional. YOU are the one who can take any of the balloons that amateurs have and turn them into something really special. “YOU are the best!” And, there is always a market for excellence.

Start With The Basic Rouse Matrix Balloon Heart

Hearts are among the most favored of shapes for expressing one’s love and for calling out similar emotions from others. Here is a basic heart shaped balloon decoration you can make with just

(40) round latex balloons and
(1) Rouse Matrix, (RMS), “Heart-40”, Expand-And-Load balloon frame.

This Balloon Heart Is Simple To Make:

1. Expand the flexible, plastic framework.

2. Load it with inflated balloons.

Once you fill up all the apertures, you are done making the basic, single layer heart. THAT IS SIMPLE; isn’t it?

Notice in this animation that the balloons are being loaded in pairs. Those pairs are often called “duplets” or “doublets”.

You lay the pair of balloons down on the RMS balloon frame (called a “Matrix”) and squeeze the balloons into adjacent openings (called “apertures”). Center each balloon in the frame so that half the balloon is on the front side of the Rouse Matrix frame and half is on the back side.

Choose From Eight Great Rouse Matrix Balloon Heart Variations For Your Balloon Decorations

There are many possible variations in the heart. You may change colors of balloons, loading techniques, overlay designs, accessories, etc. to turn your basic Rouse Matrix Heart into something even more special. Here are eight great balloon decoration ideas to get you started.

A balloon butterfly made with balloons and one Rouse Matrix Heart framework

1 – RMS One Heart Butterfly

The example to the right is a butterfly made with one, single layer, Rouse Matrix Heart and balloons of a variety of sizes and shapes. The long, skinny, entertainer balloons are used for antenna. Two, small, heart shaped balloons are used to suggest rear wings on the RMS Butterfly. Regular round balloons fill the apertures as suggested in the first part of this article. There are also many round balloons of much smaller size used to create a pattern of speckled color on the large wings.

The conversion of caterpillars into beautiful butterflies is a transformation that makes butterflies a nearly universal symbol of renewal and new beginnings. What occasions do you think of where butterflies like this one and the one below might make appropriate decorations?

2 – RMS Three Heart Butterfly

Here is another balloon butterfly decoration This one is made with (3) single layer Rouse Matrix Hearts that are connected together.

This RMS Butterfly shows off the wonderful, translucent quality of latex balloons. The single layer loading technique is especially good for this “stained glass window” effect.

The back lighting makes the balloon colors light up.

What if you were to backlight a series of simple red hearts around a room to set the mood for a Valentine’s party or anniversary celebration?

3 – RMS One Heart Fish

Here is a cute, balloon fish decoration made with one Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load, heart shaped frame. A couple of uninflated long balloons hang in front like fish whiskers and a heart shaped single balloon serves as a tail fin. Round balloons inflated to about one fifth of normal size add a pattern of colored speckles.

Can you imagine a fish like this in school colors or in team colors?

4 – RMS One Heart Bunny

This pink, balloon bunny rabbit is also made with a single, Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load, heart shaped framework. The rosey nose and blue eyes join with the tall ears to suggest one of those adorable spring time rabbits that are especially popular around Easter time in many parts of the world.

What if you changed him into a white rabbit for a magic themed party or maybe a striped “tiger rabbit” just for fun?

5 – RMS One Heart Bear

What changes would you make to turn him into a ferocious bear or maybe a cowardly one? We go from bunny to bear with this example of single layer, Rouse Matrix, balloon hearts. Brown balloons make up the majority. Pink balloons surround his black nose and fill his ears. Long, “entertainer” balloons wrap his ears and form the curve of his mouth. White balloons make his eye balls, but black markers are used to color the iris of his eyes. It is the friendly head of a teddy bear.

6 – RMS One Heart Angel

Here we have a balloon angel made from a heart. It seems entirely appropriate doesn’t it? Just one Rouse Matrix heart shaped framework is needed to make this balloon decoration with the single layer technique discussed in this blog. The heart is filled with round balloons and long, “entertainer” balloons loop around to make the wings and the halo. In this case, we have chosen white for the head (a larger round balloon), for the wings and for the outline of the body. Gold balloons fill the outline and color the halo.

What color combinations would you like to use for your angel?

7 – RMS One Heart Santa

It looks like Santa has made his entrance! Here, Santa’s white beard and hair are topped by his red hat. His pink face sports a red nose. All this comes from round balloons. Sections of long, skinny, entertainer (” twistie”) balloons are stuck onto this Rouse Matrix, heart shaped balloon Santa to form eye brows, mustasche and lips. The round balloons are loaded using the single layer technique.

How would you change this design to suggest a Santa from Africa? From Asia? From South America?

8 – RMS Tulle Heart

Here is a Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load heart shaped framework dressed up with pearlized balloons and tulle trim. It is the kind of balloon decoration you might choose for Valentine’s Day or a wedding anniversary or an engagement party. Smaller sizes of this design would make a nice gift. Or, You could use one as a base for a boquet of balloon flowers or; maybe use one as an achor for a cluster of helium filled message balloons.

MAKE YOUR BALLOON HEART 20 TIMES AS STRONG

Make Your RMS Balloon Heart 20 Times As Strong

Rouse Matrix Hearts like the one shown in this video are among our most popular Rouse Expand-And-Load balloon frames. They are easy to make and can be dressed up in many different ways to simply express your love or to create a multitude of different balloon characters and decorative designs to impress your friends and customers..

Multiply Balloon Decoration Strength, Volume & Value

The patented double layer technique shown in this video is quite simple to use with an RMS heart shaped balloon frame. It doubles the volume of your balloon project and gives it a greater “presence”. At the same time, this approach increases the strength and durability of the balloon display by about 20 times. In other words, this system effectively multiplies the value of your work many times over while requiring only twice as any balloons.

Decorate With Balloon Duplets

For the RMS 2′ heart, inflate two latex round balloons to 4″ in diameter and tie them together. (Pairs of balloons tied together like this are often referred to as “duplets” or “doublets”.) Stretch open one of the heart shaped frames on a table top. Insert one of the pair of balloons into an opening in the stretched heart frame and leave the second balloon of the pair flopping loosely in the air above. Repeat this process to fill all the apertures (openings) in the first RMS Heart frame.

Decorating Tips

(1) The first balloon of each pair should be inserted into the opening with the knot pointing straight up and centered above the balloon. (2) Two of the openings in an RMS Heart 38 and four of the openings in an RMS Heart 40 are smaller than the other openings and duplets going into those smaller openings should have balloons inflated only 2.5″ each.

Align The Second Balloon Frame

Once all the balloons are loaded in the first heart frame, then take a second heart frame of the same size and shape, stretch it open and lay it on top of the first balloon frame. Make sure the second frame is turned to align with the first.

Fill The Second Layer

Pull the loose balloons up and into the second frame. I like to start with the center balloon of the heart and then pull up the six surrounding balloons next. You may start wherever you like, but it is important that the first group of balloons stand up straight, that is with the second balloon of each pair being centered vertically above it’s mate. That way all the later balloons tend to stand up straight as well.

It Is Easy To Look Good

This Rouse double layer technique is easier than many others simply because it is more “forgiving” if you make a mistake along the way. You can get away with over inflating or under inflating balloons or not centering balloons exactly right in the frame. The results are likely to still look good.

Practice For Professional Results

We do, however, recommend that you practice this technique to get your sizing and placement of balloons correct. Your results will improve from “good” to “professional”. Your improved skill with the Rouse Double Layer Technique will make it easier for you to learn additional techniques later. And, you will be on your way to the success you want with balloons.
